What side of the fence do you sit?
Are you in favor of children being able to access social networking sites, from public schools and library's? Do social networking sites give credence to educational value? Do you care if your children are chatting online with a potential stranger, while they are in a school or library setting, supposedly learning? Are social networking sites a wonderful tool for children, or a potential nightmare?
Therein lies the debate. Several bills have been introduced in individual states as well as nationally. DOPA(Deleting Online Predators Act) as well as the proposed Illinois Bill, Social Networking Website Prohibition Act. Generally, public schools/libraries must prohibit access to social networking websites(and what, by the way, are those?) on computers made available to students. Is it up to individual teachers, individual school districts, states or the federal government, to implement and/or enforce any such filtering or bans? Should our tax dollars pay for this?
Personally, I have very strong feelings on this particular topic. Being a parent of two teenagers, an ex-police dispatcher, working for the past five years in a school district specifically supervising hundreds of children-weekly-in computer lab settings, and having a passion for educating others regarding Internet Safety, I have a unique perspective as to what occurs, and what doesn't, in school.
Your thoughts?
